In A Bit of a Funk and Some Changes – Maybe

Over the past couple of days, I will admit it, I have been in a bit of a funk and yesterday I really thought about how to get out of it.

What brought this funk on? Most likely it was when I read that David Patterson lost his battle to cancer this summer. I knew that he had fought it for over a year, but I hadn’t realized how bad it had gotten.

David was the person who taught and mentored me in how to use and implement many facets of social media into my classroom and eventually into my life. Although we didn’t see one another all that much over the past few years, we did stay in contact through commenting on his photography blog and he would stop around here to see what I was up to every so often.

I was saddened to hear of David’s passing and know that the world lost a true gentleman. It made me look again at how fragile our lives really are and how we need to work harder to stay in contact with those people who have touched our lives.

He would be the first to tell to me to do something about my funk (some would call it grieving) and get my butt moving again.

David taught me so much about how to use social media and the more that I thought about what David and I discussed back in 2008 and that I need to get back to why I started using social media. Continue reading

The Facebook ’10 Books That Stayed With You’ Meme Post

Mike over at Running Around the Bend got ‘tagged’ on a ’10 Books That Stayed With You’ post, and he tagged readers of his blog to go ahead and do their own lists.

“List 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take more than a few minutes, and don’t think too hard. They do not have to be the ‘right’ books or great words of literature, just ones that have affected you in some way.”

I did it a little differently than the instructions (what else is new) and chose the 10 books or series that I have read, which affected me in some way and that I decided to keep in my personal library because of how they affected me.

Picking only 10 was difficult, but as you can see the books I chose were more Heroic Fantasy/Science Fiction (series) than any other genre. I enjoy the coming of age / heroic action, that take me away from the more mundane life that most of us lead. Continue reading

Pushing the Redline – RunLog 9-9-14

Tuesday = speedwork, which means tonight I am freaking toast. Bennie and I sat in our easy chair after lunch (around 1:30) and then next thing I knew it was 2:45. TheWife is on vacation, so she was puttering around the house, making plenty of noise and I was basically – out and she said that Bennie never moved at all either.

Based on that result, I guess they were great workouts.

Really both of my runs today were tough ones, that challenged me in different ways.

I think that Bennie can tell when I put on my Skechers GoMeb 2’s, maybe there is something about the way I walk or get more focused when I put them on. All I know is that he seems to know when I put them on, that we are gonna run faster than usual and he takes off, then looks back at me as if to say “well aren’t you coming you old fart!”

A Quick Vacation Run – RunLog 9-8-14

TheWife and I went over to Gorham, New Hampshire for quick overnighter to start her week’s vacation.

We got in a nice hike yesterday over in Shelburne, although it wasn’t what we were looking for – it was more of an old logging road than a trail, it was still nice to be outside together, with the Bean 🙂 .



It was just an out and back on this kind of road, so we were a little disappointed, but at least now we know.

We spent the night at the Royalty Inn in Gorham, had a nice pizza and whoopie pies for supper and fell asleep before 9:00. Continue reading

Peer Pressure Sucks – Even for Runners

I made a comment over at Mike’s Running Around the Bend and he suggested that I make it into a post, so here it is.

Peer Pressure, marketing (which can be a form of peer pressure) and advertising are prevalent everywhere in our cultures. The use of the “cool kid” imagery to get us to do stuff, even if it is not in our best interests at times, has become “just the way it is” with the constant barrage of TV, brand imagery and us bloggers talking about how “great” it was to do whatever, especially when it comes to running marathon distances – You know the holy triumvirate:

  • half
  • full
  • ultra

Over the past few years, I got caught up in the you gotta run a lot of miles every week and that running in a marathon (half, full or ultra) is something you just gotta do if you are a “real” runner.

mmmmmm cough, cough Bullshit!

You do not need to run a lot of miles a week, run a marathon or even run in a race (sorry Dr. Sheehan I disagree with you on that one) to be a runner.

I really think that prevailing mood in social media and many in the running community has gotten too many runners to thinking that they are supposed to run “big” miles and always be training for the next half, full or ultra marathon and that other races are given a short shrift when it comes to respecting that distance.

After all it can’t possibly be a real race if it last less than an hour for most people – I mean just about anyone can do that. Sarcasm there folks – but that is some of the attitude I have seen and heard.
